"Vectors scale infinitely" is the line everyone repeats, and it is true about the geometry. It is not true about the result. Three things break when you push a design far from the size it was drawn at, and all three are avoidable once you know to look.
1. Strokes that do not scale with the shape
If a design uses outlined strokes, every editor gives you a choice about whether the stroke width scales with the object. Get it wrong and a design scaled to double size keeps its original hairline, so what was a balanced outline turns into a spidery one, or the reverse: scale down and the stroke swallows the shape.
In Illustrator this is Scale Strokes & Effects in the transform options. In Inkscape it is the "scale stroke width" toggle in the tool controls bar. Turn it on before you drag a corner, not after.
2. Detail below the material's floor
Every material has a minimum feature size. Vinyl will hold a finer line than heat transfer material; cardstock will hold a finer line than felt. When you scale a detailed design down, the thin parts go first: the tails of a script font, the gap between two close shapes, the inside of a small letter.
A quick check before committing: zoom to the smallest element in the design and ask whether you could weed it. If the answer is "maybe with tweezers and good light", scale up or pick a simpler design for that size.
3. Aspect ratio
Obvious, and still the most common wrecked file we see. Drag from a corner, always, or type both dimensions with the lock on. A quote design stretched 8% wider than it was drawn does not read as "wrong" to most people looking at it, which is exactly why it slips through: it just looks slightly cheap.
Resizing for a cut, step by step
- Import the SVG rather than a traced PNG, so you are moving real paths.
- Set the size numerically, from the longest edge, with proportions locked.
- Check the smallest feature at the new size.
- Cut one test piece on scrap before running the whole sheet. Always cheaper than the alternative.
What about printing?
For print, size the file to the final printed dimensions before you export, and export the raster at 300 DPI at that size. Exporting at screen size and letting the print shop enlarge it undoes the entire point of starting from a vector.
